Should I change jobs?

Posted on 26 April 2021

The alarm clock goes off bright and early on Monday morning. What's your reaction?

If you answer yes to more than 4 of these questions this could be a sign that you need a change of career.

  1. Do you dread every Monday morning?

  2. Do you take sick days/holidays for no reason?

  3. Do you feel a lack of passion/productiveness towards everyday life?

  4. Do you feel like Friday can’t come soon enough but Sunday night comes too soon?

  5. Do you find it difficult to have a work life balance?

If you found yourself relating to these questions then maybe a career/ job change is something you should consider.

Many people feel a twinge of regret as they travel to work at the start of the week; remembering the lie-ins, social activities and relaxation of the weekend just gone. But if the thought of Monday mornings always plague your weekends, there is likely a deeper issue than simply preferring to stay in bed. It is important that you can enjoy going to work because not enjoying work can affect everyone else around you but most importantly yourself. No matter what situation you are in you always have to put your own happiness first.

Considering pulling a sickie or even using up a precious holiday day just to avoid going into the office is only a quick fix and won’t cure any longer term resentment you’re feeling for the job. Avoiding and running away from your problems is the easy way out for a short period of time but in the long run it will not help you resolve your problems.

Having a lack of passion towards work can lead to you feeling uninterested about daily life which can result to you becoming unproductive. If you are feeling this way you could try prioritizing what needs to be done because for example if your work life is constantly busy it will make you not want to complete everyday tasks and it can become overwhelming but prioritizing efficiently will help. Revaluating your ambience is important because you need to consider your ideal environment. Everyone is different and you need to experiment with different types of ambience until you find what works best for you. Maybe even revisiting something that once made you happy could motivate you.

I think everyone can agree that the weekend flies by. However if a Monday morning is constantly playing on your mind every single weekend then maybe you are in the wrong job. Having a morning routine that supports your physical and mental health is a wise move because if it makes you feel good about yourself then it can motivate you to keep going and takes your mind off some of your problems.

Work-life balance can be offered for just about every job. Whether it is remote work or different scheduling options, work-life balance policies increase a person’s quality of life. If you’ve tried talking to your current employer and they strongly oppose, making a career change may be the only way to find the balance you need. Having a balanced lifestyle helps reduce stress and helps prevent burnout in the workplace. Chronic stress is the most common stress that people have in the work place it can cause so many issues for your health such as chronic pain and it can even lead to depression. To help this a work place can offer flexible hours and even to have the option to work from home. Sometimes it can help to use your initiative regarding how you live your life and how it can affect the people surrounding you.
